Teatr Limen Butoh (Poland)
Teatr Limen Butoh was established in Warsaw in 2002 by Sylwia Hanff (butoh dancer, performer of physical theatre, choreotherapist and a graduate of philosophy), as a result of her ten-year theoretical and practical research of authentic body language and the essence of a performer’s physical presence. The most important discovery and the crowning achievement of the exploration was butoh dance. Sylwia Hanff practiced butoh with the greatest masters, which allowed her to learn different methods of work, master creative development and discover her own style.
Teatr Limen is one of several most important Polish dance theatres described in J. Majewska’s book The Body Revolving Stage. New Dance in New Poland published by the Theatre Institute in 2011. The book is the most thorough description of the Polish dance written for the international audience.
Teatr Limen is a unique butoh theatre in Poland. It has been developing international cooperation for several years. The theatre organises artistic events – presentation of Polish and foreign spectacles, as well as butoh workshops. Limen invites artists from all over the world to participate in their projects.
Teatr Limen has performed at many international festivals and in different centres across Poland. The company has received several awards at theatre and dance competitions. Until now they have produced eight performances and many short forms and improvisations.
Limen is open to cooperation with various artists of fine arts, music, and theatre. Thanks to them there is an exchange of creative energy and mutual inspirations.

Butoh - a counterculture form of contemporary dance that was born in Japan at the turn of the 1950s and 60s. It breaks with the canons of traditional art, and not just traditional Japanese art. Butoh was inspired by expressionism, Antonin Artaud’s theatre of cruelty, Nietzsche's philosophy, Bataille's writing, and Genet's work. Butoh refers to the folk aesthetics of ugliness, it is a ritual that releases the inner energy and explores the darkness of the subconscious. It deliberately shows the forbidden areas of life. The essence of Butoh is the expanded perception of the body, getting rid of automatic movements performed everyday, the search for what is authentic in the body, the mysterious beauty, the openness to the Self and the unity of the Universe in its eternal cycle of life and death. Butoh is a state of unity of the mind-body that allows the subtle sensation of the inner and outer world, a pure experience of the changing states of existence. A dancer, at the very end of time, opens up a space where invisible things are revealed.
Kanabasis. La Loba is an open-air butoh spectacle.
Kanabasis is a combination of two words: katabasis (downward movement, stepping down to the abyss) and anabasis (upward movement).
Kanabasis is a journey of archetype characters through the mythical time and space of Dreaming in search of the lost power and the lost soul.
The performance is built around the character of La Loba – the One who Sings Over the Bones. The Bones symbolise a rebirth, the fact that we are in possession of the source, the primary element, and therefore we have the power to fix all the havoc of our psyche.
